For the Birds

I was cleaning up from lunch and watching this flock of birds in the backyard. They were swooping from the tall evergreens down to the Mountain Ash and furiously eating the berries. I had just thought to myself the other day that the tree looked so beautiful and cheery with so many red berries on it...I couldn't remember it having that many berries on it in previous winters. Isn't there some sort of Farmer's Almanac wisdom about the amount of berries on a tree and how long and cold a winter it will be. (Please say it ain't so!) But as I saw these birds I wondered if that was why I don't remember that many berries on the tree, I was remembering the tree after a mass foraging event like this. There must of been hundreds of birds, all flying as one group in formation, diving down on the tree, eating like mad and the alighting again to the loftier evergreens. It was an amazing sight, so I had to run outside and take some pictures. Made me think that despite my dislike of the cold there are some beautiful things about winter. Those are absolutely gorgeous shots. I'd have that top one printed and framed, or made into postcards for the holidays.

Those are Bohemian Waxwings, not to be confused with Cedar Waxwings.

Tina was looking at the first picture and I remarked how I loved the colours and I was impressed with the overall layout. It wasn't until I opened your blog that I realized she was looking at YOUR pictures. I was impressed before -now I am really impressed. YOu've hit the big-leagues now, lady.

I would have thought those were Grosbeaks (SP) but I'm also not an expert on birds. Enjoy!

I've been meaning to comment on this forever. I think these pictures look like grown-up "I Spy" images - so beautiful!
