We also put in a package or two of 'wildflower mixed seed', so things have been a bit of a surprise as they've started to bloom. Unfortunately in some cases we realized that we culled what we thought were weeds, only to see the few that escaped bloom into beautiful specimens. Overall t really has been a fun experiment, we're looking forward to trying some new things next year.

The Front Flower Bed
We planted this front flower bed mostly with seeds because we can't afford enough bedding plants to fill it. One of the things we discovered is that cosmos really don't bloom until the end of August...and then boy do they bloom. They are really quite pretty.

I pulled some "weeds" this year, too, that turned out to be volunteer marigolds from some I had put in beds last year. Our thumbs will be greener next year, for sure!
Just this morning Tomo and I were admiring the cosmos lining the road. They are cheerful looking and emerge just when the sunflowers have bent their heads.
